what's saving my life

one of my favorite podcasters [kendra adachi - aka the lazy genius] has a regular practice of noticing and naming what is making life good in any given season. she calls it 'what's saving my life' and her recent list inspired me to make my own. so here are the things bringing me little bursts of joy in the fall of 2025:

  • laughing with archie [he is easy to engage with and loves to have fun and laugh.]
  • giving myself permission to spend money on things that bring me joy [i recently realized i was often putting experiences off for 'someday' when there was no real reason not to enjoy them right now.]
  • ted group [some friends from church are getting together to eat dinner and watch ted lasso while the kids enjoy their own movie upstairs. sinking into that couch and hearing the theme music begin is a highlight every week.]
  • marta the food fairy [my friend has been clearing out some pantry and freezer food and we have been the beneficiaries. we are always excited to see what will show up next and it has made cooking feel like less of a chore.]
  • my yellow new balance tennis shoes [these were such a delightful find and they make me smile every time i put them on.]
  • the life of a showgirl [admittedly my interest in taylor has increased since she and travis became an item, but i genuinely can't quit this album. it has been the soundtrack of our fall.]
  • a weekly rhythm with lots of white space [i'm so thankful for a flexible calendar that has room for both adventure and slow days at home depending on what we need.]
  • word searches [i wanted an analog activity i could do outside while jack and archie play that wouldn't get derailed by multiple interruptions, and word search books have been the perfect thing.]
  • a very warm coat [we had a sudden early cold snap and i was so happy i had finally gotten myself a long cozy coat last winter to make it more bearable.]
  • simply doing what is mine to do [this has been a heavy season for many and it's easy to feel helpless. i can't fix it all, but i can do what is mine to do. i am starting small and helping the people right in front of me.]

archie is three

these are ten of the things we love about you:

1. the way you casually rest your chin on your hand while eating

2. when you randomly lean in close and whisper "i love you so much"

3. listening to your nightly dinnertime prayers

4. you love playing picture charades and really good at acting things out

5. almost every question you ask begins with "may you" or "may i"

6. how you're always pulling a chair into the kitchen to help make food

7. you give amazing super hugs, which involve going to the opposite side of the room for a running start

8. seeing how much you and jack love each other

9. the way you waddle like a penguin

10. you get the biggest smile on your face when you get our undivided attention

my first chiefs game

as someone who particularly enjoys the pomp and circumstance of sports, i have always wanted to experience a game at arrowhead. the chiefs have been on a pretty good run lately and knowing we are likely nearing the end of the mahomes kelce era it seemed now was the time, so we snagged some tickets in the last row of the stadium for a monday night game.

determined to maximize the adventure we showed up as the parking lot gates opened with a slab of jack stack ribs in hand. the kc tailgating scene is legendary, so we wandered around a bit to soak in the ambiance and my "first game" sign drew a good bit of attention. i ended up getting a photo with the kc wolf and we later found ourselves in very close proximity to mama kelce, which felt particularly magical since that basically put us one degree away from taylor.

when the stadium gates opened we headed in with plans to visit the hall of fame and just generally explore, but were instead surprised that we were allowed to go right down next to the field. the monday night football crew, including jason kelce, was set up for the pregame broadcast so we watched that up close for a bit before moving over to the chiefs sideline to see the team warm up and the players greet their families.

the game itself was a delight. we had a great view from our upper deck seats and the atmosphere in our section was good. we enjoyed the pregame performances and the excitement of the team introductions. the chiefs played well which resulted in lots of fireworks and opportunities to dance to "fight for your right" and we witnessed the mahomes kelce touchdown that earned travis the tie for the most in chiefs history.

then with about six minutes left in the game donald leaned over and said he had some good news. his cousin dane was at the game with friends from their church, one of whom happens to be a strength and conditioning coach for the chiefs, and they were in possession of two extra field passes for after the game. we met up with them in the friends and family room, profusely thanking them for inviting us along. i had no idea what to expect and it all happened so fast i could hardly process what we were seeing. we were led through a series of hallways and suddenly found ourselves walking through the locker room club and the players tunnel out onto the chiefs sideline.

it was wild experience to go from upper deck seats to standing in the middle of the stadium on the 50 yard line. we hung out on the field for awhile, enjoying the victory vibes in the vicinity of butker and leo, cheering as travis jogged past after his post game interview, and snagging a pic with juju behind me. when it was time to head home we walked out the entrance tunnel and ended up in the private parking lot, passing spots assigned to coaches and players.

needless to say, it was a wonderful night. i fully expected to love the game day experience, but i was surprised by just how captivating it was. there really is no place like arrowhead.

ted lasso week

it's no secret that i have a soft spot for ted lasso. the show took me by surprise in 2020 when the laughs and heartwarming moments were just what i needed, and i've been a devoted fan ever since.

in june rumors started circulating about potential filming in kansas city and on a whim i signed up with the casting agency reported to be booking extras for the show, assuming it would be a crazy long shot. as the shoot neared i became increasingly focused, desperately hoping to find a way to get in on the experience. i got my wish and then some in what is now referred to in our house as ted lasso week.

so much happened over those ten days. it was a whirlwind of delight, and these were the highlights:

scouting the filming locations

when shooting began i had no connections to the show, so marta and i embarked on a real life version of where's waldo where we attempted to track down filming locations and gather helpful intel. she happens to be very gifted in this area and early on we were able to scout out one of the homes that was being prepped for a shoot. we logged a lot of miles around town on our quest and were always thrilled when we spotted one of those yellow signs that told us we were getting close to the action.

a sighting in the wild

as the week went on reports popped up of cast members being spotted at restaurants and concerts around town and i became intrigued with the thought of seeing one of them in the wild. i knew friday was scheduled as a day off from filming, so we didn't have plans to go looking for set locations. on a bit of a whim jack and i decided to go to worlds of fun just the two of us, which we had never done before. the plan was to ride some of the rides we can't manage when archie is with us, so instead of taking our usual path to the right after entering the park we called an audible and started off to the left. as we rounded the candy shop on our way to the africa section i noticed a tall, elegant woman walking towards us. she was wearing a hat and swishing her sundress in the heat. my brain was questioning if it could really be her when i looked to the right and saw jason sudeikis standing not ten feet from us.

needless to say i froze in shock, grabbed jack's arm, and quickly tried to calculate what to do about this new development. their group was headed to the viking voyager, so i asked jack if we could abort our plan and go stand on the viewing bridge for that ride. we watched hannah waddingham splash down on the hill and the whole thing was very surreal. we spotted them on and off for the rest of the day, excited to be close but trying not to interrupt their experience.

two days on set

the process of being booked as background happens fairly last minute, so filming had already begun before i really knew i had a shot at being an extra. there is a whole series of steps before you are officially in, and jack can attest that when i got the email with the first booking confirmation i was so excited and relieved i burst into tears.

my first day on set was a hot and sunny one at swope soccer village. i have never been so happy to get up before 6am in my life. it was a long, fourteen and a half hour day, most of which was spent sitting around and waiting. it took a few hours to get everyone processed and in place, and once we were situated i spent about a third of the day in the same spot on a set of bleachers, a third under a tent next to the bleachers, and the other third on an air conditioned charter bus, which was the holding area for background. i also enjoyed taking full advantage of craft services [aka the snack table] on our walks to and from the bus.

it was very interesting to watch all that goes into filming, and fascinating to see the same short scene filmed over and over and over from different angles. while we did pass the cast a number of times as we were all coming and going from the fields, i was a fair distance from the main action so it's unlikely that i will be anything more than a fuzzy blob in this scene. however, our van was granted pole position in the parking lot and has a very good chance of getting some screen time.

i was also booked for a second day at a location so close to my regular life that i initially had trouble processing the information in the email. the fact that this show filmed where i live my actual life is still hard to wrap my head around. there were significantly less extras this time, so while the majority of the day was still down time, we were able to be a little closer to the action.

i was one of the first extras placed, which means i am at the beginning of the scene and therefore could easily be cut. on one had this is a bit of a bummer, but marta was able to track down the set on her own [i wasn't able to share the details with anyone as part of the contract] and ended up in the perfect spot at the perfect time to get photos as we filmed. cast and crew are not allowed to take personal photos on set, so the fact that i have photographic evidence of my day on set and my close proximity to one theodore 'ted' lasso is miraculous.

getting the sign signed

it was fairly common knowledge that the final day of kc filming was taking place at mckeever's market in lee's summit. despite the fact that i had already enjoyed many interactions with the show, i wasn't quite ready for the adventure to be over. knowing our best chance of seeing a cast member would come when shooting wrapped for the day we decided to make an evening of it. i wore my higgins shirt and dressed jack and archie in richmond red and blue. we brought chairs and dinner and set up on the edge of the mckeever's parking lot to see what would happen.

earlier in the day as i had been thinking through our plans it occurred to me that it would be smart to bring some sort of sign to draw attention to our side of the parking lot. i looked up and saw the 'believe' sign i had made years before hanging above our stairs, so i grabbed it off the wall, along with a letter board where i spelled out 'ted lasso and coach beard, please sign our sign'. as the plan came together i instinctively knew that getting my sign signed would be the cherry on top of an already unbelievable week.

we settled into our spot around 6pm and about an hour later a guy who looked like security walked across the parking lot toward us with a big smile on his face. he complimented our sign and asked to take a picture of it and my shirt. then he pointed at the letter board and said "is that all you want or were you hoping to get a picture as well?" i said i'd take it all if i could, but having the sign signed would be totally amazing. he responded with "give it here. i can't make any promises but i'll see what i can do."

another hour later he came back out with autographs from ted and beard. we chatted a bit and learned his name was chip and that he'd been working with jason for many years. he was super kind and complimentary of both jason and the show. when we got home i googled him and found out he's kind of a big deal! i'm guessing there are only a handful of people on set with real access to the main cast and the ability to make something like this happen, and we just so happened to meet the right guy.

i still cannot quite believe all that transpired, but the now framed sign above our stairs is proof. as the man once said, "i feel like we fell out of a lucky tree, hit every branch on the way down, and ended up in a pool of cash and sour patch kids."

things jack says

i never get tired of hearing the funny things jack says, and lately have been very entertained by his frequent and surprising use of very proper language. these are some recent additions to the dictionary according to jack:

  • poodle noodle = pool noodle
  • aloha = hawaiian lei
  • jimmy eyed joe = gi joe
  • cow beef = beef jerky
  • crinkle pop = rice krispies
  • ceremony = funeral
  • genalations = the book of galatians
  • yesterday of yesterday = the day before yesterday
  • tomorrow of tomorrow = the day after tomorrow

funny phrases and comments:

  • "if you will excuse me, i need to use the toilet."
  • "i'm not feeling on the weather today." [when he was feeling under the weather]
  • "dad, could you please keep the smell down, i'm trying to do school and i'm thinking of food."
  • "i'm sad for abraham lincoln because he never got to finish the movie because he got shot."
  • "i will praise unto the Lord for he has triumphed gloriously the horse and rider thrown into the sea, ye haw!" [this was his dinnertime prayer for quite awhile]
  • "i just love looking at him. he's like a baby angel, but sleeping." [his reason for sneaking in to look at archie early in the morning at dub's house]
  • "this is going to be another one about marsha's love circle." [him guessing who and what the next episode of the brady bunch is going to be about]

notable conversations:

donald: "what color were the cookies?"
jack: "ummm, they were kind of human colored." [aka sugar cookies]

jack: "mom, will you hold my hand tight? i'm trying to poop."
shelly: "do you think that when you're a grown up you'll still want me to hold your hand while you poop?"
jack: "no, by that time you'll be done."
shelly: "what do you mean by done?"
jack: "i mean we will have already had your ceremony."

things archie says

just after turning two archie's word count took off and this kid is practically speaking in complete sentences at this point. it is wild and also very, very adorable to listen to his little voice. here are some of his dictionary entries:

  • gagi = either of the gagas [aka grandmas]
  • oat milk = oatmeal
  • daddy cereal = any sugary cereal
  • rock 'em dig 'em = rock-a-bye baby
  • glubs = gloves
  • dollar city = silver dollar city
  • merry christmas tree = merry christmas

and these are some of the best things he's said lately, many of which we get to hear on a very regular basis:

  • "ummm couple minutes" [his answer to a wide variety of questions]
  • "my birthday in november" [his typical response when someone outside of our family says anything to him]
  • "do it by self" [technically this one is usually "no! no! do it by self!"]
  • "me want it HUGE" [this started with wanting to fill the little cup in the bathroom to overflowing when brushing his teeth, but moved on to include cereal bowls and spoons]
  • "liiittle potty" [if he only has to pee a little bit he explains it this way while scrunching his fingers and squinting his eyes]
  • "thank you mommy" and "thank you daddy" [those are just so sweet to hear his two year old voice say]
  • "daddy you comin'?" [this gets called out repeatedly when he's ready to get up from his nap]
  • "mommy's coming in a certain way, hey!" [this is the song i get on repeat in the morning when he's waiting for me to come get him up]
  • "socks and shoes go on your feet doodah doodah" [the song we sing to get our socks and shoes on our feet]
  • last but not least, one of the most frequent things i hear from him is this; "mommy mommy mommy mama mama mommy mommy mommy mommy mama mama mommy mommy mommy mommy" [it does not matter how many times i respond to him or what i say, he just keeps going and going and going]

anniversary number twelve

number twelve

we definitely cut it close this time, but still managed to have a little celebration.

on the weekend of our anniversary, the kc master piecers returned to st. paul for the second year, this time with a full four person team, but we left our cheering section in kc. so while donald was home entertaining jack and archie i was in the thick of the individual and pairs competitions. once those wrapped up julie and i headed to the airport to watch a very stressful afc championship game in two different airports and one airplane, landing back in kc with just enough time for me to race home and sneak in the door right before midnight to enjoy a late night version of our anniversary fried chicken.
